According to Mining News Pro -Downer EDI has been awarded a contract extension for its mining services at the Commodore open cut coal mine in South East Queensland.

The extension with company Milmerran Power Partners adds five years to Downer’s mining services contract up to August 2024, and is valued at $286 million.

The company has been providing full mining services at Commodore, delivering coal to the adjacent coal-fired Millmerran power station since 2001.

Located around 200km west of Brisbane, Commodore remains the only source that provides coal to the Millmerran power station, which supplies power to over one million Queensland homes through the National Electricity Market.

Downer’s scope of work will encompass mine planning and mine design, drill and blast, overburden removal, coal mining and rehabilitation.

Downer chief executive Grant Fenn said, “We are delighted to be continuing this 17-year partnership. We look forward to extending our working relationship and continuing to deliver efficient solutions for the Commodore mine.”

Recently, Downer was also awarded a $120 million mining services contract at Glencore’s CSA copper mine in New South Wales, in addition to a $660 million underground mining services contract at OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena copper gold mine in South Australia.
