Trek gains Fortescue, De Grey-endorsed exploration targets

The Tambourah project covers 290 square kilometres of gold and base metals targets within the Western Shaw greenstone belt, including at least 13 known gold occurrences and old mining workings.

The area has previously been explored by mining giant Fortescue Metals Group and gold miner De Grey Mining and some tenements have been held by Pilbara iron ore producer Atlas Iron.

It also hosts a tenement 50 kilometres south of Trek’s existing Pincunah project, which is close to Kairos Minerals’ 873,500-ounce Mt York gold project and Pilbara Minerals’ Pilgangoora Altura lithium project.

Trek has also submitted an additional application for a fourth exploration licence for tenements to the north and north west of those it has acquired in this deal.

Company executive director John Young said the acquisition is an exciting opportunity for Trek to grow its Pilbara pipeline.

“This represents an exciting low-cost, low-risk opportunity for Trek Metals to further enhance our pipeline of gold exploration targets in the Pilbara and at the same time review a highly prospective iron ore opportunity at a time of renewed interest in the iron ore sector,” Young said.

“We are particularly interested to see the results from the initial sampling conducted last month and to get started at the Western Shaw project, which is prospective for both gold and iron ore mineralisation.”

Historical production recorded at the Tambourah project by the Geological Survey in the 1970’s includes 5247 ounces at an average grade of 30 grams per tonne of gold.

In 2008, De Grey recorded “highly encouraging” gold results at Tambourah, while Fortescue completed regional exploration work for base metals and gold by means of stream sediment sampling in 2014.

Despite the big names that have previously explored the area, there has been very little drilling or trenching within the licences, giving Trek the opportunity to explore prospective but relatively untouched tenements.
