Mining News Pro - Lucapa Diamond Company has announced the recovery of the 23rd 100-plus carat diamond from the Lulo alluvial diamond mine in Angola, Africa.
The 144 carat Type IIa D-colour diamond continues a hot streak of discoveries for the company.
Lucapa managing director Stephen Wetherall detailed the company’s recent findings.
“Including the first 100-plus carat recovery from (mining block) 46 as 2020 ended, SML (Sociedade Mineira Do Lulo) has now recovered seven 100-plus carat diamonds in a little over three months,” he said.
“With these 100-plus carat recoveries and the two special pink diamonds in inventory, SML is well positioned to achieve record diamond revenues for the first half of 2021.”
Such a high-quality discovery came after Lucapa updated its JORC inferred resource for the Lulo mine in March. Its total area increased by 25 per cent, and the diluted volume increased by more than 70 per cent.
Wetherall detailed the reasoning behind Lucapa’s recent increase in diamond discoveries.
“The increases in the Lulo diamond resource over the last few yers is a direct result of disciplined investment in the alluvial exploration and delineation programs by SML,” Wetherall said.
“The 35 per cent increase in carats to almost 136,000 carats is a new record for carats in the Lulo diamond resource notwithstanding six years of mining depletion.”
Lucapa sold more than $40 million worth of diamonds last year. Contributing to this was its 1.6 million tonnes per annum Mothae kimberlite mine in Lesotho, Africa.
Earlier in March, Lucapa also sold a 5,619-carat parcel of rough diamonds for $US5.9 million ($7.72 million) at $US1050 per carat.
