Under the agreement with BHP, Downer will provide services to cover sustaining projects in mechanical, electrical and rail.

Downer chief executive Grant Fenn said this demonstrated the company’s position as an industry leader in the delivery of major maintenance and specialist services to companies in the resources, energy and industrial sectors.

“Through our asset services business, Downer has an excellent track record of delivering installation, maintenance and shutdown services to our customers across Australia,” he said.

“These new and extended contracts are a strong endorsement of our capability as an asset management partner of choice and demonstrates the strength of our ongoing, long-term relationships with our customers.”

BHP’s Western Australian iron ore operations are made up of four processing hubs – Newman, Yandi, Mining Area C and Jimblebar – and five mines in the Pilbara region. Ore from BHP’s mines is processed to produce high-grade hematite lump and fines products.
