South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Hit 14 Month High in May

South Africa one of the leading scrap exporter has hit 14 months highest ferrous scrap exports in May’18. As per recent customs data, South Africa exported 50,469 MT ferrous scrap in May’18 which have recorded highst during last 14 months’ period. Earlier to this South African scrap exports recorded highest at 55,528 MT in Mar’2017.

The country witnessed rise of 24% M-o-M in its ferrous scrap exports in May’18 as against exports recorded at 40,630 MT in Apr’18.

On yearly premises, the country witnessed considerable growth by 15% Y-o-Y in ferrous scrap exports in May’18 as against 43,777 MT exports in May’17. After witnessing fall in South African scrap exports in Apr’18, exports have turned up amid correction in global scrap prices and improved demand from major importers

In May’18, the majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban (37%), Johannesburg (30%), Cape Town (13%), Pretoria (13%) and Port Elizabeth (6%) respectively.

India remained the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap - India imported highest 25,665 MT ferrous scrap in May’18, up 57% M-o-M as against 16,323 MT in Apr’18. India hit last 18 months high scrap imports in May`18 as it was recorded highest earlier to this at 26,467 MT in Nov`16.

Pakistan imported 12,670 MT, up 5% M-o-M as against 12,020 MT in Apr’18. Bangladesh witnessed a decline in scrap imports by 11% M-o-M from South Africa and imported 9,466 MT in May. Indonesia remained silent with nil imports from South Africa in May’18.

Top three importers i.e. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh occupied 51%, 25% and 19% share of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa in May’18.

South African Pig iron exports fell 32% M-o-M in May’18 – The country exported 37,473 MT Pig iron in May’18 as against 55,293 MT in Apr’18, down 32% M-o-M. Interestingly, Bangladesh surpassed USA to became the largest importer and imported 7,350 MT of South African Pig iron in May’18 while USA (5200 MT) and Italy (7000 MT) remained other major Pig iron importers. Falling Pig iron exports could have reflected in the growth in ferrous scrap exports from South Africa.

South African scrap exports down 17% Y-o-Y during Jan-May’18 - South Africa exported 192,417 MT ferrous scrap during Jan-May’18, down 10% Y-o-Y against 214,472 MT scrap imports recorded during the same period last year.

During Jan-May’18, India and Bangladesh witnessed growth in scrap imports from South Africa by 18% and 53% Y-o-Y. India imported highest 88,419 MT ferrous scrap while Pakistan remained second largest importer with 65,843 MT followed by Bangladesh which imported 23,497 MT from South Africa during Jan-May`18.

According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in South Africa stood nearly stable at 2.65 MnT during first five months in CY18, as against 2.62 MnT produced same period last year.
