The Curragh mine produces a variety of high-quality low-ash met coal products which are exported globally to a diverse customer base of leading steelmakers.

Curragh also produces thermal coal, which is primarily sold domestically under a long-term contract to Stanwell, a Queensland government-owned entity and the operator of the Stanwell Power Station.

The Curragh mine complex is one of Australia’s largest sources of metallurgical coal, with Coronado producing 8.8 million tonnes of coal during the first half of 2021.

The incident occurred on Sunday at 12:43am where a 54-year-old coal mine worker lost their life.

A statement from Coronado said all work had been suspended while authorities conducted investigations into the incident.

“A full investigation is being conducted into the accident and Coronado is working with the Queensland police, the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and other authorities,” it stated.

“The company is focussed on supporting the family of the employee and workers at Curragh, and counselling services are being made available.”

“Coronado extends its deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the individual.”

Coronado will provide further updates as they become available.
