The solar photovoltaics (PV) system is designed to support Rio Tinto’s carbon reduction and target to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

The $2.6 billion Gudai-Darri mine will ramp up production from early 2022 to reach an annual capacity of 43 million tonnes of iron ore.

Rio Tinto has described the site as one of the most technologically advanced mines in the world due to its focus on autonomous operations.

According to NRW chief executive officer and managing director Jules Pemberton, the $60 million contract will demonstrate its ability to complete renewable energy projects.

“Securing this work recognises the broader delivery capability of the business and NRW’s long-standing experience of delivering projects for Rio Tinto in the Pilbara,” Pemberton said.

“Renewable energy represents an increasing opportunity for the group, in particular captive projects like this where the energy output is integrated to the client’s network.”

The works include the design, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of all equipment associated with the solar energy system.

It will be monitored at the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Remote Operation Centre in Perth.

With design and procurement underway, NRW will commence construction in August with the solar energy system to be completed and commissioned by early 2022.

NRW has also received a $26.5 million contract for stage 3 expansion works at Hamersley Iron’s Nammuldi waste fines storage facility (WFSF) at the Nammuldi Below Water Table iron ore project in Western Australia.

The project is located 50 kilometres north-west of Tom Price with the WFSF expansion comprised of raising the earthfill embankment and mechanical upgrades to water management structures, waste fines deposition lines and pond decant infrastructure.

NRW’s expansion works will deliver the permitted limit for the WFSF with construction to begin in mid-August.

The company has anticipated that all works at Nammuldi will be completed in June 2022.
