Mining News Pro - Global product analysis company Intertek has officially opened one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced minerals laboratories in Perth, Western Australia.
The Intertek Minerals Global Centre of Excellence will provide mining and minerals businesses with some of the world’s most innovative analysis and testing services.
The centre’s primary services include multi-element analysis for the iron ore and bulk commodities, gold, rare earths, base metals, platinum group elements (PGE) and battery minerals sectors.
It also has the capacity to process 2.5 million samples a year – helping address the global backlog in testing that is impacting miners.
The centre will be Intertek’s largest minerals laboratory and incorporates a range of innovative robotic technologies, state-of-the-art analysis processes and a strong focus on sustainability
Intertek minerals senior vice president John Fowler said the company’s laboratories provide high quality minerals assay and testing services utilising the latest technology along with proven scientific methodology
“Intertek Minerals is a leader in automated and robotic laboratory technology, being the largest commercial operator of these systems globally for the minerals industry and this new centre is testament to this with the introduction of several new systems,” he said.
“Our new Minerals Global Centre of Excellence showcases the company’s expertise and features both existing and new automated systems across all areas of sample preparation and minerals testing.”
Fowler said an extensive range of customised robotic equipment will enable the centre’s employees to work more productively, accurately and safely.
“The new centre consolidates our Perth operations into what is Intertek Minerals’ largest global laboratory, and in fact one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced minerals laboratories,” Fowler said.
“We are seeing unprecedented growth in demand for testing services and corresponding growth in the number of samples being provided, which means laboratory capacity and human resources are increasingly critical.
“To address that, the new centre’s increased instrumentation and new robotic automated systems provide Intertek Minerals with the capability to analyse over 2.5 million samples per year.
The new centre is the global headquarters for Intertek’s minerals division, which forms part of a network of more than 60 laboratories and offices in 25 countries.
