Miners rattled by COVID rollercoaster
Mining News Pro - Workers in the mining sector are feeling more overworked and insecure in their industry than the rest of the nation, according to an employee sentiment survey from ELMO.

ELMO is a software company working across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to manage people, their processes and their payments.

As such, the company performs a quarterly employee sentiment report and found the mining sector is leading the nation across a number of key indicators.

Asked how secure they felt in their industry, 27 per cent of respondents in mining were not secure compared with only 12 per cent across the nation.

At the same time, 48 per cent of respondents in the mining sector reported feeling ‘burnt out’, compared with the national average of 42 per cent.

ELMO Software chief executive officer Danny Lessem said these figures had to be the catalyst for change.

“Employees feeling burnt out, unrecognised for their efforts and insecure in their jobs is a dangerous combination for employers,” Lessem said.

“This mix should be the ‘canary in the coal mine’ to do something now to make employees’ lives easier.”

Despite feeling more burnt out than average, only 10 per cent of respondents in mining had taken a mental health day, while the nation reported 14 per cent.

On vaccinations, 80 per cent of mining respondents agreed that the economy could only return to normal if the vaccination rollout was successful.

Of these same respondents, however, only 41 per cent felt uncomfortable going to work if their colleagues remained unvaccinated.

Lessem said these beliefs should be considered by organisations as they implement regulations around mandatory vaccination.

“We are already seeing different companies take different approaches to managing vaccination requirements in the workplace,” he said.

“It’s far from a cut-and-dried matter and will require employers to be able to engage in transparent one-to-one communication with their employees.”
