BMA accelerates electric vehicle capacity
Mining News Pro - The BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has deployed light-duty battery electric vehicles (EV) and fast chargers at its Bowen Basin coal mines in Queensland, thanks to Miller Technology and Tritium.

BMA has a goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and Miller’s electric vehicles, named ‘the Relay’, will contribute to achieving that.

Miller Technology’s lead battery electric vehicle engineer Paul Summers said the Relay was of an industry-leading design.

“Relay’s technology creates a game-changing vehicle with its unique battery management system, and cooling and temperature monitoring capabilities,” Summers said.

“As a result, the Relay is the most environmentally friendly, safe and efficient light-duty mining vehicle of its kind available today.”

The Relay can fully charge in around 20 minutes for a typical 10-hour shift, allowing BMA to travel throughout its seven Bowen Basin coal mines.

“We’re proud to have provided BMA with the industry’s most advanced solution for sustainable mining in partnership with Tritium and its market-leading fast-charging technology,” Summers added.

To complement the Relay, Tritium provided BMA with RT175-S fast chargers.

These units provide 175 kilowatts of power, enabling them to give a standard EV 171 kilometres of range with around a 10-minute charge time.

Tritium chief executive officer Janet Hunter said the IP65 rating of the charger’s enclosure allows it to withstand tough mining environments.

“As the only liquid-cooled, IP65-rated EV charging technology provider, Tritium is uniquely positioned to support the mining industry’s transition to electric vehicles through innovative charging technology that is sealed to protect against sediment, dust and moisture, and rated to operate in harsh conditions,” Hunter said.

Tritium has operated across mines from Europe to Australia since 2013, allowing it to secure partnerships with the likes of BMA.

“In this industry, that’s a long history of proven track record which gave Miller Technology the confidence to choose Tritium to partner with them in this operational change in support of their goal to reduce emissions at their sites,” Hunter added.
