Mining News Pro - Anglo American has taken part in a new campaign at its Dawson coal mine in Queensland, advocating for land rehabilitation and responsible mining.
The More to Mining campaign is run by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and is building awareness of its member companies’ efforts in sustainable operations.
Anglo American metallurgical coal business chief executive officer Tyler Mitchelson said the efforts at Dawson made for a picturesque advertisement of what’s possible for land rehabilitation.
“We invest in innovative approaches to rehabilitate land and we completed more than 400 hectares across our two open cut Australian sites last year,” Mitchelson said.
“Under our sustainable mining plan, we direct our efforts to making sure that not only do we minimise impact, but that we seek to deliver positive and lasting environmental outcomes.”
The two-minute video shows 165 hectares of rehabilitated land at the Dawson site, which repurposed a dam to provide water for stock, with cattle grazing trials showing positive results.
The former pit was originally used for spoil and topsoil stockpiles, before native grasses, shrubs and trees were planted in its place.
Minerals Council of Australia chief executive officer Tania Constable said the campaign looked to show what can be achieved when an extensive rehabilitation program is adhered to.
“Planning for rehabilitation takes place long before mining commences and rehabilitation is undertaken progressively during the life of a mine wherever practical,” Constable said.
“Dawson is an outstanding example of best practice rehabilitation and we are pleased Anglo American took part in our campaign.”
More to Mining is part of a larger campaign called, There’s more to Australian mining, and has proven case studies with Anglo American, Glencore, St Barbara and Rio Tinto.
