Mining News Pro - Rio Tinto has committed 30 million yuan ($4.5 million) in funding to support projects at the Tsinghua-Rio Tinto Joint Research Centre for Resources, Energy and Sustainable Development.
The funds will be committed over a five year period, with the partnership seeing the two organisations focus on sustainability, supporting Rio Tinto’s 2050 net zero carbon emissions strategy.
Rio Tinto and Tsinghua University established the joint research centre in 2012, bringing together experts to study, generate and share ideas for the best practice for sustainable development.
During this period, the partnership has delivered more than 90 research papers on sustainability, with multiple policy recommendations submitted to the Chinese authorities.
Rio Tinto chief executive Jean-Sébastien Jacques and China national experts on climate change panel vice chairman and former Tsinghua University executive vice president He Jiankun were present for the extended agreement signing in Beijing.
Jacques said extending a partnership with one of China’s leading institutions underscores Rio Tinto’s commitment to be a part of the climate change solution.
“The Tsinghau-Rio Tinto Joint Research Centre for Resources, Energy and Sustainable Development has already delivered great insight into the outlook of our largest market and our long-term strategic considerations for the transition to a low-carbon economy,” Jacques said.
“With China’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060, the research projects conducted by the Tsinghua-Rio Tinto Centre are likely to become even more relevant to achieving China’s long-term strategic goals.”
Tsinghua University vice president You Zheng said that by continuing the partnership with Rio Tinto, the institution hopes to contribute to sustainable development of humanity.
“We will strive to build the joint research centre into one of the world’s leading research institutions on energy, resources and sustainable development and one of the most influential think tanks in China,” Zheng said.
