Mining News Pro - Lucapa Diamond Company and its partners have recovered three diamonds of more than 100 carats each at the Lulo alluvial diamond mine in Angola, Africa.
The three diamonds were of varying colours from brown to grey and contained 133, 131 and 118 carats each.
The discoveries mean that six diamonds of more than 100 carats have been found at the mine in the past three months, with 22 in total in its six-year history.
This ratio gives the Lulo mining block the best occurrence rate for diamonds over 100 carats, with one found every 20,000 cubic metres of gravel.
Lucapa’s partners which aided in discovering the diamonds were Empresa Nacional de Diamantes E.P and Rosas & Petalas. Contractor Sociedade Meneira Do Lulo (SML) was the company to make the discovery first-hand.
Last week, Lucapa updated its JORD inferred resource for the Lulo mine. Its total area increased by 25 per cent, and the diluted volume increased by over 70 per cent.
Lucapa managing director Stephen Wetherall detailed the recent increase in diamonds.
“The increases in the Lulo diamond resource over the last few yers is a direct result of disciplined investment in the alluvial exploration and delineation programs by SML,” Wetherall said.
“The 35 per cent increase in carats to almost 136,000 carats is a new record for carats in the Lulo diamond resource notwithstanding six years of mining depletion.”
Over the course of last year, Lucapa sold more than $40 million worth of diamonds, thanks in part to its 1.6 million tonnes per annum Mothae kimberlite mine in Lesotho.
Earlier in March, Lucapa also sold a 5,619-carat parcel of rough diamonds for $US5.9 million ($7.72 million) at $US1050 per carat.
