BHP helps launch bribery prevention hub to avoid foul play

The online hub is hosted by Global Compact Network Australia, which is the local network of the United Nations Global Compact and offers free resources for Australian companies to manage bribery and corruption risks.

The network’s members include BHP, Australian Federal Police, Attorney-General’s Department, Transparency International Australia, Westpac, ANZ Bank, Commonwealth Bank, KPMG Australia, Allens and the Australia-Africa Minerals & Energy Group.

BHP chief compliance officer Tim Robinson said the online hub would help companies within the resources industry.

“The Bribery Prevention Network offers important support to Australian businesses to achieve best practice, and we are pleased to play our part in its development,” he said.

“This hub will offer Australian businesses, including those within the resources industry and supply chain, the opportunity to equip themselves with the knowledge and tools they need to protect their growth and play their part in the fight against corruption.”

Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) chief executive Tania Constable said the minerals industry needed to remain vigilant in the face of bribery.

“As well as being unethical, bribery and corruption destroy healthy competition and good business. Bribery and corruption can also violate trust and undermine healthy relationships and mutually beneficial outcomes between communities, industry and government,” she said.

“No country is immune from bribery and corruption and all sectors – including the minerals industry – need to remain vigilant. The MCA looks forward to promoting the bribery prevention network and its activities as part of its work to support responsible business practices across Australia’s minerals industry whether operating within Australia or internationally,” she added.
