Inmarsat launches Tailings Insight to support safer tailings management
Mining News Pro - Inmarsat has launched a new internet of things (IOT) solution for monitoring mining tailings storage facilities.
  Zoom:

The solution, Tailings Insight, is an upgrade from Inmarsat’s award-winning Tailings Dam Monitoring Solution and is available in two forms; Tailings Insight – Cloud and Tailings Insight – Plus.

These two different propositions are designed to reflect miners’ differing needs, reflective of Inmarsat’s commitment to building more transparent and safe tailings storage facilities management options.

The Tailings Insight solution is a fully managed service and works by collecting data from a range of industry-established sensors on a long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN).

This data is then transferred across Inmarsat’s L-band network to a dashboard, ensuring mining companies can see the status of key metrics in real-time.

The Tailings Insight Cloud option was developed in response to the mining industry needing a means to compile tailings data from a range of sources.

Cloud integrates easily with existing on-site sensors and connectivity networks, which enables real-time monitoring and supports historical data input for comparative analysis.

Tailings Insight Plus on the other hand is a fully managed solution that incorporates Tailings Insight Cloud and also features sensor, integration, edge connectivity, satellite connectivity and ongoing service monitoring.

Plus can be installed at any mine and is offers service level agreements (SLAs) ensuring continuous gathering of data, which best supports real-time monitoring.

Inmarsat director of mining innovation Joe Carr said the response to the company’s Tailings Dam Monitoring Solution made it clear that the industry wanted to develop safer tailings practices.

“It is clear that the industry wants to develop safer tailings practices, though in the process we have learnt this is not about a one size fits all approach,” Carr said.

“Miners have explained that there is a myriad of different approaches to tailings monitoring taking place every day.

“Many miners lack the reliable site-level connectivity required to enable real-time monitoring and management, though on some sites, some companies have this.

“The common need that we found amongst all of our customers and the miners we have spoken to was a platform to help bring all of their data together.”

From this industry feedback, Inmarsat set out to create the two propositions, to remove the challenge of combining data from multiple sources.

The company said it would continue taking the industry’s feedback to work towards supporting a safer and more sustainable industry.

“Both of these propositions will be key to helping mining organisations future-proof themselves and respond to the upcoming changes to tailings regulation globally,” Carr said.

“They can be used in conjunction with each other at different sites across a global portfolio and upgrading from Tailings Insight – Cloud to Tailings Insight – Plus is easy.”
