Mining News Pro - Metro Mining’s Bauxite Hills mine north of Weipa is back in operation after a planned hiatus during the wet season in Far North Queensland.
According to Mining News Pro - The reopening comes off the back of a successful 2018 that saw the shipment of 2.04 wet metric tonnes of bauxite to five of Metro’s customers in China.
Metro has commenced mining and haulage operations at Bauxite Hills, focusing on building stocks in preparation of the first ship.
The second ship is set to follow later this week, with both shipments set for delivery to China-based customer Xinfa.
Metro has expanded production target at Bauxite Hills to 3.5 million wet metric tonnes this year, which Metro says it is on track to meet.
Bauxite Hills, which has an estimated ore reserve of 92.2 million tonnes and a total resource of 144.8 million tonnes over a 17-year mine life, has completed construction and installation works to support this production lift.
“Now we have laid the groundwork I am very confident the team will meet this calendar year’s revised production target of 3.5 million wet metric tonnes and build on last year’s successes,” Metro managing director Simon Finnis said.
“After the break for the wet season we are very much looking forward to getting back into operation.”
Metro ceased mining activities at Bauxite Hills at the end of December 2018 to upgrade the site’s camp and haul roads and carry out maintenance on its fixed and mobile plant.
It is now awaiting the results of a stage two definitive feasibility study for Bauxite Hills’ ramp up to six million tonnes a year, which is set to be finalised within the current quarter.
