Mining News Pro - Based in Sudbury, Ont., Frontier Lithium has announced plans to build a demonstration processing plant at its PAK lithium project 175 km north of Red Lake. The plant will have the capacity to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate (spodumene) per year from surface samples. Construction will begin in the next 12 to 20 months, depending on the receipt of relevant permits.
According to Mining News Pro - The demo plant will include gravity, heavy media, flotation and magnetic circuits. The PAK deposit naturally contains up to 4.5% lithium oxide, and that will be upgraded to 6.0% to 7.2% in the plant.
Frontier outlined five key goals for the demonstration plant:
- Produce high quality technical grade concentrates (7.2% Li2O) for glass and ceramics markets;
- Produce high quality chemical grade concentrates (6% Li2O) for the lithium battery market;
- Qualify products that meet specific customer and application requirements to secure North American and European offtake agreements;
- Validate and optimize the mining and milling technology and flowsheet design in advance of finalizing the phase two commercial production feasibility study; and
- Serve as a training facility for the local workforce to maximize local benefits of the future mining and milling operations.
The PAK deposit has a measured and indicated resource of 7.5 million tonnes of 2.02% lithium oxide and an inferred resource of 1.8 million tonnes of 2.10% lithium oxide. The mineralization has a rare technical or ceramic grade spodumene with low inherent iron (below 0.1% ferric oxide) as per the preliminary feasibility study disseminated on April 16, 2018.
