STRABAG’s Züblin gets underground contract mining extension at Candelaria in Chile
Mining News Pro - STRABAG Group’s Züblin International GmbH Chile SpA has been awarded an extension to its contract with Mina Candelaria Subterránea for another four years.

According to Mining News Pro - The contract value amounts to €65 million. Located in Copiapó, in the Atacama region, 650 km north of the city of Santiago, the Candelaria mine is an open pit and underground mine which provides copper ore to a concentrator located on-site, with a capacity of 75,000 t per day. ZÜBLIN Chile has been involved in the work since the beginning of 2005.

The extension to the contract involves 22,400 m of horizontal developments, plus 1,771,000 t of loading and transport of material, among other works. With this extension, ZÜBLIN will oversee 58,400 m of horizontal developments. “We have been working in Mina Candelaria for 14 years and have optimised the resources and processes in each of the projects in which we have taken part. The extension of the contract with Mina Candelaria Subterránea is proof of this and makes us proud,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE, and continuous: “We owe our success mainly to the work of our local team, who fulfilled its commitments in a responsible and professional manner.” Candelaria is 80% held by Lundin Mining and 20% by Sumitomo.
