Australia Iron Ore Export Drops 7% in Q3 CY18

According to Mining News Pro -Australia - world`s largest iron ore exporter has recorded decline in export shipments in third quarter of CY’18. According to the vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint, Australia`s iron ore export shipments dropped by 7% Q-o-Q to 208.91 MnT in Q3 CY’18 compared to 225.61 MnT in Q2 CY’18. Fall in export volumes could be attributed to reduced purchases from Chinese mills over there preference shift towards high grade Brazilian iron ore.

Spot iron ore fines Fe 62% prices of Australia origin remained stable at USD 66-67/MT, CFR China in Q3 CY18 against USD 66/MT, CNF in previous quarter.

On yearly basis the Q3 CY’18 Australian iron ore exports fell slightly as against 211.18 MnT in Q3 CY’17.

In Sep’18, Australian iron ore exports stood at 71.65 MnT, up compared to Aug’18 exports which was at 70.59 MnT.

China is largest destination (contributing 80- 85%) of Australian iron ore exports, hence, a change in Chinese market affects Australian exports.

Indian iron ore imports increased by 20% in Q3 CY’18

India imported 1.98 MnT iron ore from Australia in Q3 CY18 compared to 1.65 MnT in previous quarter. Increased imports by JSW Steel raised Australian iron ore export volumes to India.

China marked the largest importer of Australian iron ore at 169 MnT, in Q3 CY’18 down 9% against 185.43 MnT Q2 CY’18.

Japan stood the second largest importer in Q3CY’18 at 17.37 MnT (up 2% Q-o-Q), followed by Korea at 13.17 MnT (down 7% Q-o-Q). India witnessed increase in imports at 1.98 MnT, up 20% Q-o-Q.

Iron ore exports from Australia’s Port Hedland at 127.2 MnT in Q3 CY18

In Sep’18, export shipments from port Headland moved up 2% on monthly basis to 44.11 MnT in Sept’18, followed by Walcott at 14.7 MnT (down 3% M-o-M) and Dampier at 11.7 MnT (up 6% M-o-M). Port Hedland is used by three of Australia’s top four iron ore miners — BHP Billiton, Fortescue Metals Group and Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting.
